National Security Examined by Top Legal Experts
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Three programs will analyzenational security during the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) AnnualMeeting (January 6-10, 2009) in San Diego.
National Security Law Advice to the New Administration is a programsponsored by the AALS Section on National Security Law. The panelists for thisprogram will explore a range of issues that President Obama's newadministration will face including reforming the U.S. posture in domestic andinternational national security law, restoring an emphasis on human andsocietal security and providing a new set of models for detention andadjudication of suspected terrorists.

Banks, professor of law and director of theInstitute for National Security and Counterterrorism at Syracuse University."We believe this panel will offer insightful and creative ways the newadministration could shape its national security policies." This program willoccur on Thursday, January 8, from 8:30 - 10:15 a.m. at the San Diego Marriottand Marina.
The AALS Section on Federal Courts is also sponsoring a program titledHabeas Corpus and the War on Terror. This panel of legal experts will reviewthe issues surrounding federal jurisdiction and the Government's detention andtreatment of alleged enemy combatants and other individuals connected with thewar on terror. Some of these issues include the availability of judicialreview, under the Constitution, in cases of Executive detention; the extent towhich any right to habeas corpus based review depends on the citizenship ofthe detainee; and the extent of Congress's power to limit the federal courts'habeas jurisdiction. The panel will also review developments in the SupremeCourt and lower courts relating to habeas corpus and the war on terror. Thisprogram will occur on Friday, January 9, from 3:30 - 5:15 p.m. at the SanDiego Marriott and Marina.
Take Arms Against a Sea of Troubles? is a program sponsored by the AALSSection on Admiralty and Maritime Law and co-sponsored by the AALS Sections onInternational Law and National Security Law. This panel will discussinternational, regional, and unilateral measures to enhance maritime securitysince 2001 (such as the Proliferation Security Initiative, the U.S. ContainerSecurity Initiative, Australia's Maritime Identification System, and anti-piracy proposals before the United Nations) and any tension that these maygenerate with established maritime rules and regimes. This program will occuron Thursday, January 8, from 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. at the San Diego Marriottand Marina.
