Telcordia Maps Telecom's Newest Frontier: Home Networks
Telcordia Examines Future Growth, QoS and Emerging Opportunities
PISCATAWAY, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 01/05/09 -- Telcordia, a global leader in thedevelopment of IP, wireline and mobile telecommunication software andservices, today announced the release of two special reports that map outthe intricacies of telecom's newest frontier -- the home network.
In "Broadband Home NetworkInfrastructure - Viewing the Future," Telcordia analyzes the importanceof a home network infrastructure in the era of high-bandwidth networks, andthe move from multiple, autonomous home networks to integrated, broadbandhome networks that support multiple HDTV streams, including voice, videoand data.
The report details the elements of home network infrastructure, comparesin-place media, such as coax, telephone line, power line, and wireless, andevaluates other media such as optical fiber and unshielded twisted-paircable. The report reaches conclusions about the medium- and long-termeffects of home network media and LAN technology choices, and makesrecommendations for "future-proofing" home networks, while taking advantageof the current in-place media.
Authored by Dr. Steven G. Ungar, Senior Research Scientist, Telcordia, thereport is an essential reference for telecom managers and engineersinterested in delivering broadband solutions to home network devices, aswell as manufacturers of home network end devices.
The second new report, "Enabling and Ensuring QoSin the future Broadband Home Network," addresses the many facets ofproviding and assuring Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia servicesthroughout the home network. The report addresses approaches to configuringhome networks to ensure QoS, as well as methods of measuring and assuringQoS. The report is written by Dr. Ken Kerpez, Senior Scientist, Telcordia.
"Home networks will dramatically change as bandwidth consumption and thenumber of devices interconnected in the home continues their explosivegrowth," said Zach Gilstein, Vice President, Service Assurance Solutions,Telcordia. "As this occurs, CSPs, equipment and software vendors, andconsumer electronics manufactures will need to understand thetechnological, quality and business issues that must be addressed to ensurea high quality, sustainable customer experience."
