"Mr. Obama has shown that taking a vacation during these tough times is agood way to relax and recharge batteries for the tasks ahead," said JohnMonahan, president and CEO of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau(HVCB). "It's telling that of all the places he could have vacationed, hepicked Hawaii as the best place to have fun for himself and his family."
Born and raised in Honolulu, President-Elect Obama spent 12 relaxing daysat a beachfront estate on the windward side of Oahu. He enjoyed many of theattractions and activities that make Hawaii such a popular destination. Healso held a private memorial service to honor his beloved grandmother, thelate Madelyn Dunham, a Honolulu resident who passed away two days before theelection.
For the most part, Hawaii enjoyed its typically inviting winter weatherwhile the future president was here, with daily temperatures in the high 70s,bright sunny skies, and gentle tradewinds. Though he maintained a low publicprofile, President-Elect Obama spent lots of time on the beach, golfed onnumerous occasions, took his daughters to experience the marine wonders at SeaLife Park and exotic animals at the Honolulu Zoo, dined at the award-winningAlan Wong's Restaurant, and enjoyed a refreshing Hawaii favorite -- shave ice.
Monahan added, "You won't find a better, more enjoyable place anywhere inthe country to unwind and escape the chill of winter than Hawaii. There aren'tmany places this time of year where you can golf, bodysurf, and enjoy theoutdoors in shorts and a t-shirt than right here in the islands."
Interest nationally in President-Elect Obama's background in Hawaii hasskyrocketed since he won the presidential election. In response, HVCB hascreated a special micro-site at http://wwwGoHawaii.com/Obama listing theimportant and favorite places of his life in Hawaii.
