Small Business Asks the New Administration to Focus on the Economic Crisis, VerticalResponse Survey Reports

80% of Respondents See Economy as Primary Concern, With 66% Already Having Seen Negative Impact of Recession, According to Award-Winning Email Marketing Service Provider and Small Business Resource

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/07/09 -- VerticalResponse, the leading provider ofself-service email marketing and direct mail solutions, today released theresults of a "Political Impact" survey it conducted among a sample of itsnearly 50,000 small business customers. Survey questions focused onpredictions and expectations small businesses have for the Obamaadministration as he prepares to take office on January 20, 2009. Thesurvey found that 66.4% of small business owners have been affected for theworse by the recession -- and that a full 80% see the economic crisis asthe primary mandate for the new government.

Small business is the backbone of the U.S. economy representing 99.7% ofall employer firms, and generating 60 to 80% of new jobs annually over thepast decade, according to the Small Business Administration. TheVerticalResponse customer base is representative of the diverse group thatmakes up that number -- spanning services and producers, home-basedbusinesses and multi-office companies, across industries.

Nearly 83% of the businesses surveyed make less than $250,000 mentioned sofrequently during the election process, and 45.1% of small business ownerspolled believe that the incoming administration will have a positive impacton small businesses. While the economy tops most lists as the majorconcern, 72.5% have not had to lay off workers and 14.4% are still hiring.

Of the respondents, 55.3% are sole proprietorship LLCs, 31.6% arecorporations, 6% are non-profits, and the remainder are described as"other." Respondents were split nearly half: half (42.7%/41.3%) are locatedin urban or suburban areas, with the remaining 15.9% located in ruralAmerica -- and are split nearly evenly throughout the regions of thecountry.
