Sepia
"rich brown pigment," 1821, from It. seppia "cuttlefish" (borrowed with that meaning in Eng. by 1569), from L. sepia "cuttlefish," from Gk. sepia, related to sepein "to make rotten" (cf. sepsis). The color was that of brown paint or ink prepared from the fluid secretions of the cuttlefish. Meaning "a sepia drawing" is recorded from 1863.
The Omni publishing group of Canada, has been working on resurrecting the venerable Sepia Magazine.
In it's heyday, Sepia was the biggest competitor to Ebony, Jet, Tan etc...
The new publishers will stay close to the definition of Sepia. In that in this incarnation, it will not be a "black" magazine so much
But a ethnic magazine focussing on issues pertinent to people of color.
CEO Brad James, says "my background is art, I don't know a lot about publishing, hopefully we'll find a editor that understands our vision."
People think that because the President is black, that the whole world went "presto chango" it did not.
Why would it ? When black people still account for only 12 % of the population in the USA. And although change is coming, we'd like to accelerate it so that we can enjoy some of the benefits of being wonderfully brown, now !
