This may come as no surprise after its issues in development, but the “Project CARS” Wii U port has officially been cancelled, with developer Slightly Mad Studios saying the game was “simply too much for the Wii U” console.

The racing game was released on May 7 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC – with a Wii U port still in the works – and sales did well initially. With a loose 2015 release window for the Wii U version, the developer started running into problems, experiencing issues on the Nintendo system.

“At the moment we’re running at about 23fps [at 720p] on the Wii U,” studio boss Ian Bell told Nintendo Life before E3 2015. “Unless we really cut the looks back, I think we’re looking at Nintendo’s next console.”

Bell said that “Project CARS” for Wii U was always a maybe but that the team is “awaiting an announcement from Nintendo on new hardware” before it continues work on the game.

“Project CARS” is a motorsport racing simulator game similar to “Gran Turismo” and “Forza.” Watch the trailer release from E3 2014 below.
