PS4 Pro Boost Mode was introduced in the console’s recent 4.50 firmware update, and it’s advertised to improve performance on some titles that don’t have a proper Pro patch. Want to see just how much the system’s high-end specs make a difference? Try one of the games listed below.

1) Dark Souls II: Scholar Of The First Sin: From Software titles are incredibly tactical and notoriously difficult, so having a steady framerate often means the difference between victory and death. When played on a standard PS4, Dark Souls II frequently suffered from framerate drops as low as 10 frames below the 60 fps target. This was a huge problem when large or numerous enemies were on screen.

With Boost Mode and PS4 Pro, those problems evaporate for an experience that’s 60 fps throughout. You’ll still have to prepare to die, but not because the hardware couldn’t meet your standards.

2) Battlefield 4: When Battlefield 4 launched in 2013 it was lambasted for networking and performance hiccups. However, with a little time and a little boost, the experience you’ll get is markedly improved.

Especially when driving vehicles in explosion-heavy areas, there were drops of up to 15 fps with the game’s latest update installed. Once again, however, PS4 Pro’s added chips have no problem hitting 60 fps and staying there.

3) Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition: When Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition first landed on PS4, it was easy to overlook its occasional framerate dips for its noticeable upgrade in visual fidelity. However, with those 1080p textures and hair physics improvements came noticeable slowdown. This was especially true in forest areas where environmental effects are pumped to the max.

In this case Boost Mode can’t stay locked at 60 fps, but the occasional 20-frame dip is swapped for something closer to five or less. Even at its worst, this title’s biggest flaws become barely perceptible. That’s pretty awesome considering how great this game is otherwise.

4) Assassin’s Creed Unity: Assassin’s Creed Unity got a bad wrap for its poor performance across all platforms, but PS4 Pro may now be the best place to play the latest patched version. Ubisoft opted for a 30 fps target for this title, and Boost Mode hits that standard with little to no dips. Prior to Boost, you’d see dips of 10 frames or more when navigating through those dense, French crowds.

5) Project CARS: Project CARS is known by racing fans for its intense visual effects, but those trappings often tanked performance on a standard PS4. Especially when weather comes into play, the title’s uncapped framerate could dip as low as 35 fps.

On Boost you still can’t make it all the way to 60, but the biggest moments of slowdown will still only be in the 50s. In terms of an actual performance increase, this game probably offers the most noticeable one despite these other strong contenders.

To enable Boost Mode on your PS4 Pro go to Settings > System and select Boost Mode. Performance will vary across all titles, but these are five of the brightest stars. Be sure to check out our external hard drive installation and wallpaper guides for even more help with update 4.50.
