Marvel Hip-Hop Cover Variants Are So Perfect We Can't Stop Thinking About Iron Man As 50 Cent [PHOTOS]
Sometimes there are products you never knew you needed until they happen. Take Marvel's hip-hop album cover variants, for example. That's right, Marvel has created hip-hop cover variants featuring the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Howard the Duck, Ms. Marvel and more.
The Marvel tributes to iconic rap and hip-hop albums will not just be a token gesture, as Marvel will release more than 50 variant covers. "Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces when we unveil the first of more than fifty variant covers, each of which pays tribute to an iconic album cover from the past 30 years that shaped pop culture over the past three decades," Axel Alonso, Marvel editor-in-chief, said in a statement.
For "Invincible Iron Man" #1, the hip-hop variant is an homage to "Get Rich or Die Trying" by 50 Cent. The "Ant-Man" #1 variant by Mark Brooks is a tribute to "Ready to Die" by Notorious B.I.G.
Doctor Strange is reimagined as Dr. Dre, while the X-Men become De La Soul. Some of the pairings are pure strokes of genius. We're big fans of Howard the Duck as Ol' Dirty Bastard and Squirrel Girl as Tyler the Creator is another inspired pairing.
There will be 11 hip-hop variant covers released by Marvel beginning in March. "Amazing Spider-Man" #1, "Guardians of the Galaxy" #1, "The Mighty Thor" #1, "Uncanny Inhumans" #1, "Sam Wilson, Captain America" #1 and "Uncanny Avengers" #1 are among the first wave.
Marvel will continue to release hip-hop variant covers throughout the fall. "All-New All-Different Avengers" #1, "Old Man Logan" #1, "Ms. Marvel" #1, "The Totally Awesome Hulk" #1, "Spider-Man/Deadpool" #1, "Squadron Supreme" #1 and "Howard the Duck" #1 will be among the later releases.
Based on the first batch of variant covers, we're excited to see what Marvel has in store throughout the fall. What rap and hip-hop classics do you hope will get the comic treatment?
