  • Rafael Nadal will not be defending his title due to concerns about the global pandemic
  • The 19-time Grand Slam winner has been preparing mentally for Roland Garros
  • One of the favorites to win this year’s US Open is Novak Djokovic

The current global pandemic has caused Rafael Nadal to skip this year’s US Open. This gives the opportunity for the 19-time Grand Slam winner to focus on the French Open. This withdrawal would make Novak Djokovic the favored winner of the US Open if he decides to pursue this year’s tournament.

Despite the threat of COVID-19, the United States Tennis Association confirmed that the US Open would still push through by the end of August.

With the heavy implications of what the coronavirus brings, Nadal opened up on social media regarding his stance about playing. The Spaniard champion reached out to his supporters by saying he will not be defending his US Open crown this year.

“After many thoughts, I have decided not to play this year’s US Open. The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don’t have control of it,” Nadal tweeted.

This opens up a big chance for Djokovic to remain dominant throughout the year if he pursues with playing this year. The sporting world will find out within the week if the world number one player will play in the US Open this year, per The Guardian. If the Serbian star decides to continue with this year, he’ll be in a big position to win the major.

Boasting 17 Grand Slam victories, the current world number one is very much on his way to winning more titles and slowly catch up to Nadal and Federer. For Nadal, he will be taking his time in preparing for the upcoming French Open.

“In my mind, I am preparing for it,” Nadal said by way of The Guardian.

Nobody has come close to Nadal’s success in Roland Garros as he’s won a record of 12 trophies in the illustrious event.

“But we have to wait for events, to see how everything evolves because it is true that in recent weeks the situation seems to have worsened a little. But my hope and my intention would be to be there if conditions allow,” Nadal added.

It will be crucial to see how the upcoming US Open plays out despite the ever-evolving times. Whether it’s Djokovic or an up and coming star, everyone’s health and safety remain as the top priority.
