Real Madrid broke the jinx and qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in seven years after a 3-0 victory over French side Olympique Lyon at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria bagged the goals for Madrid as they turned in an excellent display for a thoroughly deserved win.

On the 37th minute, Madrid full-back Marcelo found the ball down the left, cut in and exchanged a one-two with Ronaldo, before skipping away from Cris and feinting a shot to take out Lovren. He then transfered the ball to his left and shot at the far post, as the ball went in despite Lloris getting a hand to it.

In the second half, Real continued their pursuit of the crucial second goal, and 65 minutes into the game they got it. In-form player Karim Benzema pounced on Marcelo's long ball, before slipping his shot in between Lloris' legs and into goal. 10 minutes later, Real scored their third when Ozil headed Di Maria through and Argentine winger cooly chipped over the onrushing Lloris to seal a memorable victory.
