Real Madrid surged into the top of the Spanish La Liga after thrashing Real Zaragoza 6-0 in their first league game of the season at the La Romareda.

The La Liga was supposed to start a week back, but a player's union strike meant the opener was postponed.

Cristiano Ronaldo has started the league as he ended it last season. He won the European golden shoe in the last campgain for his 40 goals in the league, wherein he scored a hat-trick seven times. Against Zaragoza, he scored in the 24th, 71st and 87th minute to take an early lead on his personal battle with Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who are yet to open their league campaign.

Marcelo, Xabi Alonso and Kaka scored the other goals, as Madrid proved too strong for the home side.

Barcelona will open against Villarreal on Monday.
