Cristiano Ronaldo showed why he is one of the best players in the world, and why Real Madrid is arguably the best club in the world, with a two-goal effort to sink Lyon at Stade de Gerland, 2-0, in Champions League group play, on Wednesday.

The first goal by Ronaldo came in the 24th minute, when he delivered a signature curling free kick from just outside the box that found its way through the wall and by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

In the 69th minute, defender Mouhamadou Dabo was called for a foul on Ronaldo in the penalty box, and the Portuguese attacking midfielder took the shot from the spot, and scored to give Los Galacticos the two-goal lead.

The goals represented the 99th and 100th for Ronaldo in 105 matches for Real Madrid, and the La Liga giants advanced to the Final 16 of 2011-2012 Champions League season with the victory.

Lyon had some quality chances. In the 78th minute, forward Jimmy Briand's header from the right side of the six-yard box hit the crossbar off a cornerkick from Yoann Gourcuff, while goalkeeper Iker Casillas was frozen. On the replay, midfielder Mesut Ozil had tugged on Briand's jersey. Had the tug been viewed by official Nicola Rizzoli, it would have likely resulted in a penalty kick.

In the final minutes of the match, Gourcuff gave Briand a well-placed pass from inside the center circle that found the surging forward by himself in the penalty box, but Briand's shot was wide of the far post.

Briand also had a deflected strike that was saved by Casillas, as the veteran keeper preserved the shut out.

Lyon finished with 17 shots, with seven on goal, but Real Madrid took 26 shots, with 11 on goal, and controlled possession for 57 percent of the match.

Real Madrid have won all four of their group play matches, and outscored their opponents 10-0.

Ajax is in second place in Group D, with seven points, and Lyon is in third place with four points. Dinamo Zagreb have zero points

Real Madrid's next match will be Sunday, when they host Osasuna in La Liga play.
