The story of Mary Queen of Scots has ended on The CW.

The network has canceled the period drama. The upcoming fourth season will be the last of “Reign,” according to Deadline. The cancellation news has been announced just when the show is filming its Season 4 finale – which will now serve as the show’s series finale.

Disappointed fans can take comfort in the fact that The CW and the producers of “Reign” have been talking about Season 4 being the show’s last. In fact, the writers were aware of this and have crafted a fitting end to Queen Mary’s (Adelaide Kane) story.

The 16-episode Season 4 is set to premiere on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at 9 p.m. EST. The last episode will air sometime in June.

News of cancellation, although devastating for some fans, isn’t much of a surprise to a majority of the show’s seasoned viewers. This is because, “Reign” hasn’t been doing so well in terms of ratings. The Season 3 final drew only a 0.3 rating, according to a report by Zap2It.

Long-time “Reign” fans are already started petitioning on Change.org to get Netflix to pick it up.

The series’ cast has also reacted to the cancellation news. Toby Regbo, who played King Francis, said that it was a pleasure working with the amazing cast and crew. Rose Williams, who plays Princess Claude, shared a photo of her last day on set shooting “Reign.” Even Alan Van Sprang, who played King Henry II, bid adieu to the drama series.

Fortunately, Torrance Coombs, who played Bash, consoled upset fans by pointing out that there are 16 more episodes of “Reign” to look forward to. He then thanked fans and pointed out that the series would have aired 78 episodes after Season 4 which is the same number of episodes as eight seasons of “Game Of Thrones.” Which is, of course, impressive.

“Reign” bows on Feb. 10, 2017.
