Rejoice, “Resident Evil” fans! The original game is being remastered for release in early 2015. Well, sort of. Japan-based developer and publisher Capcom plans to revamp the 2002 Nintendo GameCube version of the game, not the 1996 game created for the original PlayStation, PC, Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS.

The title will launch in early 2015 and will be available on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4 and PC. It will be on 1080p on PC, Xbox One and PS4 and will support 5.1 surround sound.

Players can choose how they want to play the game -- in its classic 4:3 ratio or 16:9 widescreen. Along with the classic controls and mechanics, new modern controls will be added.

The original “Resident Evil” was one of the first games to be categorized in the “survival horror” genre. The title introduced popular in-game protagonists Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. Both are members of the elite task force S.T.A.R.S. and must investigate the disappearance of other squad members in Raccoon City.

The title was originally developed as a remake of Capcom’s 1989 horror role-playing game “Sweet Home.”

“Resident Evil” launched on Sony’s PlayStation and received generally positive reviews, including a 91/100 on Metacritic. GameSpot described it as “one of those rare games that’s almost as entertaining to watch as it is to play.” It eventually became a best-selling title in North America, selling more than 5.05 million units.

“Resident Evil 4”, one of the most popular titles in the franchise, is available in HD on Steam, Xbox Live and the PlayStation network.
