This holiday season Capcom will be releasing Resident Evil 6, the next chapter in the classic horror survival franchise. The company launched the undead-thriller game's teaser trailer yesterday at its Captivate Event, but fans may be getting more than they expected with Resident Evil 6.
Back in March Capcom said that the upcoming zombie-apocalyptic release was going to be the biggest game the 16-year-old franchise has seen to date.
The plan is the biggest Resident Evil Game ever, the company's SCP of Planning and Development Christian Svensson said to Game Informer nearly a month ago. We're not messing around.
Capcom seems to be backing up that claim, saying yesterday that the game will take around 30 hours to play through. This would make it Capcom's longest survival horror game to date. Game Director Eiichiro Sasaki told NowGamer that each individual campaign is almost as long as the game's predecessor.
The three characters each have their own story and you can choose whichever one you want and play that story, he said to the video game news site. In terms of length, each character's story is a little less than 'Resident Evil 5' but when you combine them together you'll get something that's much longer.
He also explained that although there is a solo element to each character's story, the plotlines do intertwine at certain points.
While each character's story stands alone, all of the characters wind up in the same area of the game, in China, so there's a certain level of overlap.
Resident Evil 6 will be split up into three distinct campaigns that can be played in order. Leon's plot line takes place in the United States, Chris' will be in China and Jake, the song of Albert Wesker, handles business in Idonia.
After the launch of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, it seemed Capcom decided to shift directions. The game received subpar reviews, with criticisms of character AI and some glitch controls. At the end of March, Capcom producer Masachika Kawata said that Resident Evil 6 needs to be more of an action game than its traditional survival horror stigma.
Looking at the marketing data [for survival games]... the market is small compared to the number of units 'Call of Duty' and those action games sell, he said to Gamasutra.
