Stocks opened lower on Tuesday, easing back after a 10-week high as disappointing results from Dow Chemical Co and Procter & Gamble pushed investors to the sidelines.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 34.74 points, or 0.33 percent, to 10,639.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 <.SPX> dropped 4.46 points, or 0.40 percent, to 1,121.40. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> lost 8.07 points, or 0.35 percent, to 2,287.29.

The S&P 500 was trading above its 200-day moving average for a second day, a bullish technical signal.
