Retail shares were mostly higher on Monday, with gainers including Sears Holdings, Staples and Macy's.

Sears Holdings Corp. rose $5.41, or 4.13 percent, to close at $136.30. On Monday a Barron's report over the indicated that the company's real estate division may ultimately deliver returns to investors despite previously tough times for the firm's stock, although there remain concerns over the fallout from the downturn in the housing market.

Office Supply firm Staples gained 0.74 cents, or 3.44 percent to end at $22.28. Computer maker Dell said Monday that it will begin to sell some models at 1,400 Staples stores starting on November 11.

Macy's shares were up $0.71, or 2.35 percent, to $30.95.

The Standard & Poor's Retail Index rose 7.99 points, or 1.78 percent to 458.10.
