Rick Santorum's presidential campaign has picked up an endorsement from an unusual place.

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, an Alabama native, has thrown his support to the Republican ahead of the Alabama Primary on Mar. 13.

According to Santorum's campaign Web site, River said: I am supporting Rick Santorum for President because of his stance on issues that attack vital Christian values our country was founded upon: no abortion, upholding traditional marriage, defending religious freedom, no euthanasia.

Like Santorum, Rivers is a Catholic, who shares the former Pennsylvania Senator's conservative social views. Rivers said that Santorum will also fight to create jobs and expand opportunities for all Americans.

Athletes' support for politicians rarely generate much voter interest, and Santorum's campaign shouldn't be too thrilled by Rivers's endorsement, as the former North Carolina State star hasn't exactly been known as a winner in his eight-year NFL career. Though Rivers has had an excellent passer rating of over 100 between 2008 and 2010, the Chargers frequently under-achieve, and Rivers has yet to lead San Diego to a trip to the Super Bowl.

Still, Santorum's campaign has been rather devoid of celebrity support and a well-known football player might provide some energy on the trail. In February, Megadeth rocker and former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine sent a statement to CNN denying an endorsement for Rick Santorum's campaign.

Contrary to how some people have interpreted my words, I have not endorsed any presidential candidate, Mustaine said. I hope to see a Republican in the White House. I've seen good qualities in all the candidates but by no means have made my choice yet.
