“Rocket League” is about to get more exciting starting this week. As part of the Halloween-themed event of the vehicular soccer video game, players can now open loot crates without the need of buying a Key with real money. Of course, there are other interesting things in store for players this Halloween season.

Developer Psyonix announced late last week that a special event is scheduled to happen starting Oct. 16. This special event is called Haunted Hallows, and it is definitely one for the books. For one thing, it will give players the chance to unlock crates using a free item called Decryptor.

Decryptors are special items designed to open crates. The best part about this new item is players can get it for free. However, there is a catch: Players will only be capable of obtaining Decryptors when they spend Candy Corn.

Candy Corn is a new in-game currency. This will specifically show up during the course of the Haunted Hallows event only. This means players won’t be capable of obtaining Candy Corn after this Halloween season’s event.

Players who will be joining the Haunted Hallows event in “Rocket League” starting this week can earn Candy Corn by playing and finishing matches. Then, in order for them to get Decryptors, they need to spend Candy Corn on event loot crates and all of the other Halloween items available.

Decryptors can be used in opening both Halloween loot boxes and regular ones, so players are encouraged to make the most out of this feature starting this week. However, Psyonix warns that crate items unlocked with the use of Decryptors are untradeable. Only items unlocked using a normal Key can be traded by players.

Meanwhile, it is best to play numerous matches to get as much Candy Corn as possible. This new in-game currency will only be available until a week after the Haunted Hallows event ends. Although Candy Corn will not be available a week after the Haunted Hallows event, all items bought using this currency will remain, as pointed out by PC Gamer.

“Rocket League’s” Haunted Hallows special event will commence this Monday, Oct. 16, at exactly 5 p.m. PDT. It is scheduled to end on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. PST. Psyonix indicated that the crates that will emerge throughout the Haunted Hallows event will not be updated for next year’s Halloween season. Hence, it’s possible for players to wait until a year later to open their crates.

Psyonix’s move to introduce limited-time currency to open crates comes at a time when the Loot Crates feature of console games is getting a lot of negative attention. DualShockers reports the feature has become a hot topic due to its botched implementation in “Middle-earth: Shadow of War” and “Star Wars Battlefront II” beta. It is important to note though that while the Loot Crate System is a fairly new feature of console games, it has been part of the PC space for many years now.

Rolling Stone has learned that many players complain about the Loot Crate System, for it could lead to a “pay-to-win” scenario. This is because crates can be earned either by completing challenges and realizing milestones or by purchasing them with real-life money or in-game credits. The involvement of real money is what players fear, thinking that this would encourage certain players to purchase many loot crates to obtain more weapons, Star Cards, outfits, and many others than those who don’t.
