CBS en route to winning November 'sweeps'

With another dominating week in the television ratings, CBS will win the November "sweeps" for the eighth straight year. Back when they started winning, "sweeps" months were very important in the TV industry. But with more local markets having their viewership measured electronically all year long by Nielsen Media Research, the need for sweeps--select months when those markets were looked at--has receded. Networks no longer lard up their November, February and March schedules with big events just to jack up ratings.

Barack Obama the week's biggest TV star

A president-elect and a Navy investigator--one real and the other one fictional--are ratings "sweeps" month stars at CBS. Barack Obama's "60 Minutes" interview on Sunday was seen by 25.1 million people, the biggest audience for any prime-time network program this season, according to Nielsen Media Research. The venerable newsmagazine, which also won last week, hasn't been the nation's most popular show on back-to-back weeks since 1992-93.
