Wednesday, the Statistics South Africa announced that the retail sales at constant prices dropped 5.3% year-over-year in March, compared with a revised 4.4% fall in the previous month. Economists were looking a decline of 5.5%.

For the January to March period, retail sales at constant prices declined 2.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, retail sales at current prices increased 6.6% year-on-year in March.
