Thursday, the Statistics South Africa announced that the producer price index or PPI rose 5.3% year-over-year in March, slower than the 7.3% increase in the previous month. Economists were looking an increase of 5.6%.

On a monthly basis, producer prices climbed 0.1% in March, after falling 0.3% in February.

In March, producer prices for exported commodities showed a nil growth on an annual basis, after a 1.6% increase in the previous month. Month-on-month, export prices rose 0.2%.

The PPI for imported commodities decreased 10.1% annually in March, after falling 8.8% in February. Import prices were up 0.4% compared to the previous month.
