In the wake of some lackluster same-store sales news for October, the AMEX Retail HOLDRs Trust has dipped 1.4% to hit a new annual low. As consumers saved money for fuel costs, fretted about the housing market, and stretched their summer wardrobe into the fall thanks to unseasonably warm temperatures, the majority of U.S. retailers felt the pain.

As always, there were notable winners and losers in the sales game, and there is no rhyme or reason to the results. Included among the top performers are a drugstore retailer, a luxury department-store chain, and a retailer of casual apparel for young adults. On the worst-performing list are a variety of apparel retailers, a department-store chain, and a furniture retailer.
