In an interview with The Korea Times, Samsung’s Lee Young-hee confirmed that the company’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch would be announced in conjunction with the Galaxy Note 3 on Sept. 4 at a press conference prior to the IFA consumer electronics trade show.

Lee Young-hee, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile, told the newspaper that the Galaxy Gear will not have a flexible display and will be a companion gadget for smartphones like the Galaxy Note 3. Samsung “will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4,” the executive told the Korea Times.

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch will run on the Android operating system, much like the company’s smartphones, like the upcoming, phablet-sized Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4. Lee told Korea Times that the Samsung Galaxy Gear will “enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways.”

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch release is likely timed to beat Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to the punch. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in May that he was “profoundly interested” in the wrist, and the company has registered “iWatch” as a trademark in several companies. Sony has also announced the SmartWatch 2, which the company will release at an undisclosed date in September.

Lee said that while the first-generation Galaxy Gear will not have a flexible display, she hinted that future iterations of the device could utilize Samsung’s flexible OLED technology, stating the company has “patents related to ... future products.”
