Adding to the appeal of its new flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone, Samsung announced during the device's launch in London last month that it would come with 50GB of free cloud storage through Dropbox for two years. Though there was no mention of the promotion when the smartphone was announced across five carriers in the US earlier this week, customers just assumed that it was still part of the deal. But now it appears that users of two major US carriers won't be eligible for the free space promotion.

Select carriers have opted out of the promotion on phones otherwise eligible, reads a post on Dropbox's customer support page on the promotion. Unfortunately, AT&T and Verizon are among these carriers not currently participating.

As The Verge notes, the 50GB free cloud storage promotion, available internationally, adds 48GB more to Dropbox's regular 2GB free allowance and runs for the length of an average contract. It doubles the amount of free Dropbox storage offered by HTC's One series. In February, HTC announced its partnership with Dropbox to fully integrate its cloud storage into every HTC One phone, offering 25GB of free storage for two free years.

Though it's unclear as to why both Verizon and AT&T have opted out of the promotion with neither of them has commented on Dropbox's announcement, it's possible that one or both is planning its own cloud alternative, according to Slash Gear.

Unlike the US, the Samsung Galaxy S3 users in Europe are getting free Dropbox storage that can amount to as much as 66GB. After signing up to Dropbox via the app pre-loaded onto the Galaxy S3, users in Europe can get 48GB of extra space beyond the free space the cloud storage service typically offers.
