Samsung Group’s (KRX:00530) competitor to the Oculus Rift has been unwrapped, weeks before the consumer electronics giant is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone. According to a report from The Verge, Samsung will release a virtual-reality headset alongside its Galaxy Note 4 in dual events hosted in Manhattan and Berlin on Sept. 3.

The tech site published photos of Samsung’s upcoming device online that show a headset with lenses and a case that holds a smartphone in place so that its display and sensors can be used to power a virtual-reality experience. Engadget reported in June that the headset may not be a true competitor to game-changer Oculus Rift, since parent company Oculus VR is working on the software side of Samsung’s unannounced goggles.

Engadget also reported it had no confirmation that Samsung’s foray into virtual reality would ship with a game controller, but in photos, a controller is plainly visible, connected to an L-shaped bracket. It is not immediately clear if the Samsung controller shown in the photo is meant to be used in tandem with the headset or if it's a separate product.

“Project Moonlight,” as the product is reportedly codenamed, is similar to Cardboard, Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) do-it-yourself version of virtual reality, which it unveiled at its annual developers conference in June. Project Moonlight also features a focus dial and may connect to the Galaxy Note 4 through a micro USB cable.

Oculus VR on Tuesday released a version of the Oculus Rift’s software development kit compatible with Mac OS X. The company was bought by Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) earlier this year for over $2 billion in cash and stock.
