Samsung Reveals New 4K HDTVs: Shows Off 98-inch Screen, Hints At 110-inch And First Ever Ultra HD OLED TV [PHOTOS]

While the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smart watch drew the lion’s share of the media attention at Wednesday's “Samsung Unpacked” in Berlin, it wasn’t the only impressive technology the South Korean company had up its sleeve. At the Thursday IFA electronics show in Berlin, Samsung revealed a new 98-inch Ultra HDTV and plans to make a 110-inch model. Samsung also hinted that it is developing the first-ever Ultra HD OLED TV.

Ultra HDTVs have four times as many pixels as traditional HDTVs, known as 4K resolution in the industry (4,096 x 2,160 pixels, for example). Though little content is actually produced in 4K, TV manufacturers are hoping it will become the new standard and give consumers a reason to purchase new TVs.

But the concept of an Ultra HD OLED TV, if Samsung ends up producing it, is an even bigger deal. OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode, and allows for much higher contrast than LCD panels. The technology has been difficult to bring to market. Samsung’s largest OLED TV is a 55-inch curved-screen 1080p resolution unit that sells for more than $13,000.

Besides showing off the 98-inch Ultra HDTV and the concepts for the other models, Samsung did not disclose much else about the TVs. More information about features, specs, release date and price will likely be revealed at CES 2014.
