Samsung has decided to join the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2018 in Detroit this week to showcase its new battery technologies including quick-charging EV batteries.

Korea Herald learned Monday that Samsung SDI is presenting its newest inventions for the battery and renewable energy market. The South Korean tech giant’s lineup comprises rapid-charging batteries, multifunctional module packs and low height battery cells. Samsung said its new batteries are capable of increasing electric car range and charging capacity.

The theme for this year’s NAIAS — also known as Detroit Motor Show— is “Future Starts Today,” indicating that participants will be introducing future electric vehicle technologies that are already on the same level as the advanced internal combustion engine vehicles of today. For its part, Samsung’s fest-charging and high-capacity batteries would be remarkable additions to the components that EV manufacturers are using for their products.

Samsung showed off its lineup of battery cells for EVs and plug-in hybrid cars that come in 37, 50, 60 and 94 ampere hour capacities. The tech giant proudly shared that part of this lineup are battery cells that can power electric vehicles as far as 600 kilometers after charging for just 20 minutes.

The multi-functional module battery packs are aimed at automakers who need batteries whose modules and capacities can be adjusted to provide a wide range of driving distance capabilities to their various products. This lineup will therefore be the perfect choice for manufacturers who want to offer the same type of battery to an entire vehicle platform, as indicated in Samsung’s press release that was shared via Business Wire.

In introducing its low height battery cells, Samsung explained that this new product basically pertains to a battery cell whose height has been reduced by more than 20 percent. The Galaxy S9 maker claims that because this type of battery is shorter than the ones already available in the market, automakers can use it for cars that they intend to equip with bigger interior space.

Samsung SDI has said that it will also introduce its new battery technology called “graphene ball” at the Detroit Motor Show this week. According to the company, this innovative technology allows a 45 percent capacity increase and five times charging speeds than standard lithium-ion batteries and solid-state batteries. Samsung also confirmed that it is exhibiting a new technology that improves the capacity and safety of solid-state batteries at the event.

“We will lead the popularization of electric vehicles by developing products based on cutting-edge technology which will in an optimum manner meet the needs of our customers and the market,” Samsung SDI executive vice president of automotive business and ESS business Jeong Seh-woong said. “We will continue to lead global market as the world’s top technology company providing total solutions for EV battery applications.”
