A Caltrain struck and killed a 63-year-old man in San Jose near Blossom Hill Station on Wednesday night, the eight fatality of this year.

The incident happened at about 6:40 p.m. south of the Blossom Hill station near Highway 85 and Great Oaks Boulevard, according to Tasha Bartholomew, a Caltrain spokeswoman.

The identity of the man was not immediately released.

Initially, it was believed to be a possible suicide, but further investigation revealed that was probably not the case, Tasha said. It looked like he might have been trying to take a shortcut across the tracks.

The official cause of the man's death is under investigation.

No matter what the circumstances, any loss of life is regrettable, said Tasha Bartholomew. Caltrain reminds everyone to exercise caution around train tracks, she said.

None of the 30 passengers aboard the train were injured, and a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus took the passengers to their final destinations.
