Rick Santorum's daughter Isabella is recovering from pneumonia in a local hospital in Virginia. Three-and-a-half year old Bella, as she is called fondly by her family, is affected by a devastating genetic condition called Trisomy 18.

Trisomy 18 is a fatal disease which kills 90 percent of the victims during or before the birth. Only one percent of the affected children survive beyond 10 years.

Santorum had cancelled all his campaign events on Sunday and Monday morning to take care of the baby girl who was hospitalized on Saturday. In a tele-call with Minnesota voters he said that Bella is fast improving and had a miraculous turnaround, an ABC News report said.

Bella has fragile health and her genetic condition makes her vulnerable to medical complications easily. She was hospitalized with pneumonia in both the lungs and is currently in Intensive Care Unit.

Santorum said in the tele-call that Bella has passed the critical hours now, but has a long way to go towards recovery. He said that she is no more in danger and said she isĀ on the mend, really miraculously on the mend and the family dodged another bullet.

Meanwhile, eldest daughter of Santorum, Elizabeth, has hit the campaign trail, replacing her father. According to a ABC news she addressed a campaign rally at Florida.

Addressing a gathering of 250 she said that her father wished to be there, but at the moment he is doing the most important duty as a father and a husband, that is to be with his suffering little daughter. She said he will be back to campaigning as soon as possible.

Santorum is currently stuck at third position in Florida Republican primary, according to the latest polls. Since Florida is a winner take away all the delegates primary, Santorum doesn't have much hopes here.

He had earlier said that he will not come to Florida till the poll date and will concentrate on next states like Nevada and Minnesota that goes on poll in the first week of February.
