KEY POINTS

  • Sarah Jessica Parker was set to be honored during the New York Ballet 2022 Fall Fashion Gala before she dropped out last minute
  • It was announced that the actress had a "sudden, devastating family situation"
  • Parker shared the heartbreaking news that her stepfather, Paul Giffin Forste, has died

Sarah Jessica Parker's beloved stepfather, Paul Giffin Forste, has died. He was 76.

The "Sex and the City" star's family announced that Forste — who married Parker's mother, Barbara, in 1969 — died Wednesday. The cause of death was not disclosed.

"Our family is sad to announce that after an unexpected and rapid illness, Paul Giffin Forste passed away yesterday at age 76," Parker's family said in a statement obtained by Page Six Thursday. "In his last moments, he was surrounded with the love and gratitude of his adored wife Barbara of 54 years, and children, including Sarah Jessica Parker."

The statement continued, "Paul will be remembered with the spirit of loving kindness which was his faith, his special delight in his 13 grandchildren, and his sustained belief in making the world a more charitable, tolerant, and beautiful place for all."

The news comes after Parker pulled out of New York City Ballet's (NYCB) 10th Annual Fall Fashion Gala Wednesday evening due to a "sudden, devastating family situation," according to Page Six.

Parker was being honored at the gala, but an unnamed source who was in attendance at the event told the outlet that the actress didn't arrive at the David H. Koch Theater at New York City's Lincoln Center, where it was held.

Parker is the vice chair of the NYCB Board of Directors, according to the outlet. She also worked behind the scenes in crafting the Fall Fashion Gala, which was first celebrated a decade ago.

The family tragedy happened just a day after Parker attended the "Hocus Pocus 2" premiere with her 13-year-old twins, Marion and Tabitha, and husband Matthew Broderick.

The "And Just Like That..." star rocked a floral tunic with pink pants and fuchsia stilettos for the event, while her husband wore a brown suit.

Marion wore a glittery dress and pink heels, while her sister Tabitha opted for a black dress and paired it with purple shoes. Both of Parker's daughters styled their hair in curls.

The celebrity couple also shares a 19-year-old son, James. They welcomed their daughters via surrogate in 2009, seven years after they welcomed their eldest.

James was noticeably missing from Tuesday's premiere. However, he made a rare appearance to support his mom at the premiere of "Sex and the City" revival "And Just Like That..." in December 2021.
