ABC recently renewed “Scandal” for a seventh season, but despite the happy news, there are speculations suggesting that Season 7 could be the last for the hit TV series.

According to TV Line writer Andy Swift, “Scandal” premiered on the network in 2012 as an electrifying television series headlined by Kerry Washington. Its unique theme, which is half-procedural and half-political thriller, made it extremely appealing to millions of viewers across the globe. Swift also pinpointed some episodes from Seasons 2 to 4 that made the most impact on audiences. However, due to these moments, Swift believes that Season 7 will be the last for “Scandal” because there’s nothing left to explore in the series.

In Season 1, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) almost died after he was shot. In Season 3, Sally Langston (Kate Burton) bludgeoned her husband to death, while in Season 4, Olivia Pope (Washington) was kidnapped. However, since Season 5, “Scandal” has gone through some major changes in terms of storylines. The series episodes were also cut down, and in Season 6, the premiere date for the show was pushed back to accommodate Washington’s second pregnancy.

More recently, Swift noted that “Scandal” just released its 100th episode, and the series is now focusing on another mysterious organization like Rowan Pope’s (Joe Morton) B613. On top of this, Fitz and Olivia have already reunited in the previous episodes. The two characters shared a kiss, so it is highly likely that the two of them will become a couple again soon.

However, ABC hasn’t made this decision yet. The series, which is created and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, is still generating good ratings even though it has seen a decline in some weeks. Rhimes is also known for her successful TV shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” which is still on air with its 13th season.

Meanwhile, “Scandal” is scheduled to release a few more episodes before its May 18 finale. Before ABC made the announcement, TV Line entertainment writer Michael Ausiello already hinted on the finale date for “Scandal” Season 6. “ABC hasn’t announced anything, but one may get a hit by looking at the eight and 18th word of this sentence,” he said earlier this month.

On Thursday, May 4, “Scandal” will release Season 6, episode 13. The installment is titled “The Box,” and it will center on Olivia and Fitz teaming up against the former’s dad, Rowan. In episode 12, titled “Mercy,” Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) was named as the new president of the United States. She was also tasked to appoint her vice president, and she chose Luna Vargas (Tessie Santiago), Frankie Vargas’ (Ricardo Chavira) widow. Mellie’s shocking decision was supported by Olivia and Fitz, but Rowan didn’t share the same sentiment. Additionally, Rowan is also not happy with the fact that Olivia and Fitz are back together.

Elsewhere in Season 6, episode 13, Jake (Scott Foley) will employ surprising tactics to manipulate a mysterious woman into giving him the information that he needs.

“Scandal” Season 6 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
