Despite its low Season 2 ratings, “Scream Queens” might still be renewed for a third season.

During FOX’s Television Critics Association session on Wednesday, Jan. 11, network bosses said that the comedy-horror series might still get a Season 3 renewal depending on the network’s needs this coming May.

“It’s very much still in consideration for a renewal,” FOX entertainment president David Madden said of the Ryan Murphy-created series (via Variety). “The ratings don’t tell the whole story; because it’s such a young audience, you can’t really even see the full picture even in L+3.”

“Scream Queens” Season 2 finale, which aired last month, closed out with 1.38 million viewers overnight and a 0.5 rating in 18-49 demographic.

“Obviously, we would have loved to have seen bigger numbers,” FOX chairman and CEO Gary Newman said (via TVLine). “[But] delayed viewing was there … [and] it reaches a hard-to-reach younger audience, which we liked.”

Murphy’s strong relationship with FOX could also help “Scream Queens” get a Season 3 renewal. Murphy is also the creator of “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story” and the much anticipated anthology series “Feud,” which all air at FOX’s sister network FX.

At the end of the Season 2 finale, Cassidy (Taylor Lautner) was killed by Nurse Hoffel (Kirstie Alley), who later stumbled into a pond of quicksand where she was left to die for her crimes. Brock (John Stamos) and Hester (Lea Michele), meanwhile, successfully stole money from Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), which they used to fly to Blood Island.

Munsch sold C.U.R.E. Institute and started her sex class for women over the age of fifty. Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin) and Zayday (Keke Palmer) were last seen still working at the hospital, while Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) became a manager for Chanel’s (Emma Roberts) new medical talk show, “Lovin the C.”

In the final sequence of the season, Chanel left “Lovin the C’s” studio and went straight to her car, where she saw an old ring with Kappa Kappa Tau’s coat of arms embedded onto it. When she looked in the mirror assembled before her, she saw the Red Devil behind her, causing her to scream. The screen went black, leaving her fate unknown.
