Shiva Safai and the cast of “Second Wives Club” are changing the way women are portrayed in reality TV. The cast, which consists of ex-wives, wives of previously married men and the like, is focusing on uplifting one another, rather than tearing each other down for the sake of viewership.

In an interview with International Business Times, Shiva Safai said that’s what sets the E! reality show apart from others. She described “Second Wives Club” as having “a lot of humor,” adding that she and her co-stars make a point of “empowering each other.” She claimed that their respective relationship statuses with their men is what bonds them and allows them to relate so well to each other.

“Because we’re all second, third, fourth wives, we can kind of understand what one another are going through,” she explained. “It shows how we all come together and we can be there for each other without all the cattiness of typical reality shows. Every single [cast member has] a blended family. It’s real life. There’s ex-wives, there’s step kids — modern families. It’s really about that rather than fights and things like that.”

In addition to the deep connection they all share that is rooted in their relationships, Safai said the lack of competition between the cast members contributes a great deal to their dynamic. She explained that since they’re all “so different,” they’re able to work together to achieve their various goals and build strong bonds. The E! reality star feels the “Second Wives Club” cast is more supportive of one another than most.

“I think we’re all individually so different so it’s not like there’s a competition between any of us. We kind of encourage our own positives. I encourage Katie [Carzorla] with her businesses or the fact that she’s struggling with the commitment of marriage,” she told IBTimes. “There’s not a lot of competition. We can all support each other.”

While “Second Wives Club” focuses strongly on the female cast, their partners often come into play. For Safai, that was a major bonus in signing on to the fledgling E! reality show. She was thrilled to show fans a side of her relationship with fiancé Mohamed Hadid -- who was previously married to Yolanda Hadid of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,”-- that wasn't just told through social media posts.

“I was really excited to show [‘Second Wives Club’ viewers] how my relationship with Mohamed is and how we make it work,” she said. “Before that everyone was judging based on social media. To actually see how a relationship is so great and we have fun together and have our own struggles — it was a great way to show who we are and how our relationship works.”

Perhaps the most intimate thing she and Mohamed will share on the show? The secret to their lasting relationship. Safai told IBTimes the pair are polar opposites, but still enjoy spending a tremendous amount of time together, which makes them the perfect match.

“It’s so funny,” she said. “I always say I’m an old soul and he’s so young at heart. We kind of balance each other out in that way. We really enjoy doing everything together, whether it’s travelling, spending time with friends, cooking, but yet we give each other space to do our own thing.”

If E! renews the show for a second season, Safai hopes to bring new aspects of her life to share the stage with her and her fiancé. She told IBTimes she’d love to feature her family on “Second Wives Club.” She also hopes that if Season 2 happens, she and the cast get to travel more.

“I definitely think I would love to bring in my brothers more. More about family. I love the whole [idea] of having more family members on the show. That would be great. We had such a fun time travelling, so maybe add more of that to the new season.”
