Memorial Day weekend proved not to be the lovefest Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez might have had planned. E! News reported that the teenybopper couple would reunite, after their busy schedules had kept them apart for some time, over the holiday weekend.

But an incident at a California mall proved to be a dark cloud over the reunion.

On Sunday, Justin Bieber was in Calabasas, northwest of Los Angeles, where he lives, at a mall called The Commons with girlfriend Selena Gomez, TMZ reported. A photographer attempted to take a photo of them and, according to law enforcement, a physical altercation ensued. When the cops arrived on the scene, Bieber and his girlfriend had already left.

Bieber was photographed looking angry and disoriented as Gomez attempted to calm him down and pick up the hat and shoe he lost in the scuffle.

TMZ reported that a lawyer approached the photographer at the Calabasas mall and told him he could get a lot of money out of the incident and advised the dude to call for an ambulance and file a police report. The photographer complained of pain in his upper torso and was taken to a nearby hospital. He is now accusing the singer of battery.

Reuters reported Monday that Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are investigating the complaint against Justin Bieber.

Justin Bieber, who is usually quite vocal on Twitter, has not commented on the battery incident via his social network. His tweets over the weekend focused solely on his June 9 performance at Wembley Stadium in London.

Girlfriend Selena Gomez, however, did have something to say.

On May 27, the day of the incident, Gomez tweeted: THANKS YOU SO MUCH to my fans for always protecting me and being there for me. I can't thank you guys enough. I'm sorry I had to rush out. Love you guys.

On Monday, she tweeted about the good times she had over Memorial Day Weekend: I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day/Weekend, had some [good] BBQ this weekend.

This incident is the latest in a bout of turbulence for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

Last week, breakup rumors spread after Justin Bieber fans uncovered a tweet sent by the Boyfriend singer on May 17 that read: thank you for the time i had with you but i have to move on now.. Bieber attended the Billboard Music Awards solo, and Gomez posted a photo of herself at a shooting range releasing some stress.

Luckily for Jelena fans, the rumors proved false.

E! News spoke to sources close to Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez who said that the couple is more in love than ever. The two plan on spending as much of the summer together as possible, as work has kept them apart recently. The two reportedly talk constantly and have been video chatting whenever each has a break in their respective busy schedules.

But this latest snafu may have its consequences.

As Reuters noted, Bieber has professed a determination to maintain a squeaky-clean image. Could this battery incident soil his reputation?
