Shailene Woodley Disses ‘The Secret Life Of The American Teenager,’ Actress Calls ABC Family Series Immoral

Up-and-coming actress Shailene Woodley, who's been called "the next Jennifer Lawrence," recently made the arguably bad decision (like many actors before her) to bash one of her former roles.

In an interview with Flaunt magazine, the 21-year-old star of “Divergent” and “The Spectacular Now” shared her unfavorable opinions of the now-defunct ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” in which she played the lead role of teen mother Amy. Woodley said the final seasons of the show conflicted with her own morals: “I didn't like it because if it started to change, I had no control over it. The things that we were preaching on that show weren't really aligned with my own integrity.”

The California native, who first drew critical attention for her role in the 2011 film “The Descendants” opposite George Clooney, didn’t specify the exact themes that troubled her, but she did claim that her final years on "Secret Life" put her in personal conflict. “It was a bit hard to show up to work every day knowing that we were going to project all of these themes to thousands -- millions -- of young adults across the country when in fact they weren't what I would like to be sending out,” said Woodley.

Asked why she didn’t leave the long-running ABC Family series, which premiered on the network in 2008, Woodley cited contractual obligations. “It's like anything in life, whether you're an actor or you work in an insurance office: If you want to be able to leave your job, it's nice to be able to leave your job,” she said. “But when you're in a contract, unfortunately, you can't do that."

Woodley last made headlines when Yahoo! News reported that eyewitnesses spotted her getting cozy with her “The Spectacular Now” and “Divergent” co-star Miles Teller at the MTV VMA Awards in August. According to the report, the duo was seen acting like more than friends at the Brooklyn, N.Y., event. “We watched as the two rising stars took turns wrapping their arms around each other's shoulders and cracking each other up," a source in the report said. "While all that might be nothing, it was definitely cute."
