Shares of silver mining companies rose Monday as the price of white metal increased along with the broader stock market.

Silver for March delivery, the most actively traded contract on the Comex, was up 25 cents to $28.93. Spot silver was up 10 cents to $28.85.

The broader stock market was climbing. In late afternoon trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.20 percent to 12,384, the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.14 percent to 2,678.09 and the S&P 500 was up 0.21 percent to 1,280.43.

In late afternoon trading, shares of Silver Wheaton were up 0.17 percent to $30.15, shares of Coeur d'Alene Mines were up 0.20 percent to 25.69 percent, shares of Hecla Mining were up 0.88 percent to $5.70 and shares of First Majestic Silver were up 0.71 percent to $18.41.

Among exchange-traded funds backed by silver, iShares Silver Trust was up 0.82 percent to $28.14, Sprott Physical Silver Trust was up 1.36 percent to $14.9 and the ETFS Physical Silver Shares Trust was up 0.77 percent to $28.73.
