The orphanage from where Wesley Mathews and his wife adopted Sherin Mathews claimed Wednesday that the toddler did not have any developmental disabilities. The foster father of the 3-year-old told police that Sherin had an eating disorder.

Orphanage owner Babitha Kumari, of the Nalanda Mother Teresa Anatha Seva Ashram, told ABC-affiliated WFAA that Sherin had no problem, "whether it was about drinking milk or eating," adding that the family appeared "loving," and that Wesley called often before the adoption was processed.

Wesley was arrested after he changed the story of the day Sherin went missing. Sherin went missing Oct. 7 and her father said he put the child outside in the middle of the night near a tree about 100 feet from their home as punishment for not drinking milk. When he returned, he found that his daughter was missing.

On Sunday, police searching for the toddler found the body of a child close to Sherin's house. After the body was discovered, Wesley changed his statement he earlier gave to police saying that he the 3-year-old choked on milk in the early morning of Oct. 7 and that he "believed she had died."

Wesley said he "physically assisted" Sherin in drinking her milk after she refused to do so on her own.

"Wesley Mathews advised to Detective ... he had been trying to get the 3-year-old girl to drink her milk in the garage," the arrest warrant stated, according to WFAA. "Wesley Mathews said she wouldn't listen to him. Eventually, the 3-year-old girl began to drink the milk. Wesley Mathews then physically assisted the 3-year-old girl in drinking the milk. The 3-year-old girl began to choke. She was coughing and her breathing slowed. Eventually, Wesley Mathews no longer felt a pulse on the child and believed she had died. Wesley Mathews then admitted to removing the body from the home."

Earlier he told police that Sherin's mother Sini Mathews had been sleeping the entire night. While Wesley is facing the charge of first-degree felony, which carries up to a life-term in prison, Sherin’s mother has not been charged.

In a statement issued by her lawyers Wednesday, Sini denied any involvement in the death of her adopted daughter, Sherin.

In the statement, her lawyers Mitchell Nolte and Gregg Gibbs insist Sini cooperated with the Richardson Police investigation into her daughter’s disappearance and say she was "interrogated for hours by several officers with no attorney present," a few days later.

The statement goes on to say: "Now that Mr. Mathews has turned himself into the police and told them what happened to Sherin, we see no need for Mrs. Mathews to endure further police interrogation. She had nothing to do with Sherin’s death or the removal of her body from the home."

The lawyers also wrote that Sini is "trying to grieve for her lost daughter while still caring for her remaining daughter. She is struggling to pick up the pieces of a shattered life."

Wesley was booked into to the Dallas County Jail Wednesday and has been placed under suicide watch.
