A shootout erupted at an apartment complex about 19 miles south of downtown Seattle on Sunday evening, leaving five people dead, including a wounded man lying in a parking lot who was shot by police as he reached for his weapon.

Police responded at about 9:30 p.m. PDT to gunshots at Pinewood Apartments on Pacific Highway South in Federal Way, Wash., local television station Komo reports. Shots were being fired as police arrived at the scene. They saw two wounded men outside the complex, including a man who reportedly attempted to open fire on the responders.

The other wounded man died at the scene. Police found the body of another man in the parking lot and two more bodies – a man and a woman – in separate apartments. Investigators believe the shootout erupted in the flat where the man’s body was found.

By 11:30 p.m., police officers were no longer seeking suspects, and the area had turned into a crime scene. The names of the dead had yet to be released as of 6:22 a.m. EDT Monday.
