Tragedy is coming to Springfield. “The Simpsons” executive producer Al Jean says the beloved animated comedy is planning to kill off a major character in a coming episode of season 25, which debuted Sunday night.

Fourteen years ago, “The Simpsons” shocked audiences when the show killed off Maud Flanders, wife of the Simpson family’s squeaky clean neighbor Ned Flanders. While “The Simpsons” is usually known for pressing the reset button after a particularly upsetting change, Maud’s death stuck, affecting the show’s characters for seasons to come. Now, it’s about to happen again. Jean confirmed to the Sun News that producers will be killing another well-known character. He refused to say who, but offered one hint.

"I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is," Jean told the Sun News.

That narrows down the choices somewhat, but not as much as you might expect. “The Simpsons” has run for so long that the voice actor for nearly every major character has won an Emmy for their work on the show. Series regulars Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson), Julie Knaver (Marge Simpson) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson) have all won Emmys for their characters, making the entire Simpsons family vulnerable.

Still, it seems unlikely that any of the show’s main cast will get the axe this season. But plenty of other voice actors have also won Emmys for their “Simpsons” roles. Marcia Wallace (Edna Krabappel), Hank Azaria (Apu Nahasapeemapetilon), Jackie Mason (Rabbi Hyman Krustofski), Kelsey Grammer (Sideshow Bob) and Anne Hathaway (Princess Penelope) have also won Emmys for “The Simpsons.”

To further confuse the matter, Castanellaneta and Azaria have both won Emmys for portraying “various characters” in the episodes “Worst Episode Ever,” “Moe Baby Blues” and “Today I am A Clown.” That leaves beloved minor characters Moe Sztslak, Comic Book Guy, Chief Wiggum, Officer Lou and Carl Carlson as possible victims on season 25 of “The Simpsons.”

Our guess? Either Lisa’s perpetually sour schoolteacher Edna Krabappel or Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, father to world’s worst entertainer, Krusty the Clown. Killing either would allow Lisa or Krusty to cope with the loss of an authority figure in their lives without sacrificing a major player in the series. Still, “The Simpsons” could take a left turn and end up killing off basically anyone listed above.
