27-year-old singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her north London home. A Metropolitan police spokesman has confirmed that the woman has died and that her cause of death is not yet known.

London Ambulance Service was called to the flat at 1554 BST.

The singer was notoriously troubled and suffered from alcohol and drug addiction. Winehouse took herself out of a comeback tour last month and she appeared too drunk to perform.

Winehouse's drug use has been well documented. A video of Winehouse smoking crack cocaine appeared on YouTube in January 2008.

Winehouse's 2006 Back to Black album cemented her fame and won her five Grammy Awards.

Rumors of Winehouse's death began to appear on Twitter Saturday evening. Among those to comment was former prime minister's wife Sarah Brown.

Former prime minister's wife said, It's deeply sad - the most completely tragic waste of talent that I can remember.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote on Twitter, Can not believe the news. Amy was a special girl. The saddest news.
