How will “The Sinner” end?

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 8 of the USA Network series, Cora’s (Jessica Biel) fate is finally determined in the finale.

In Season 1, episode 7, it was revealed that Cora’s sister, Phoebe (Nadia Alexander), was accidentally killed by Frankie (Eric Todd) — the guy Cora murdered on the beach at the beginning of the series.

Phoebe and Frankie met each other for the first time at the Beverwyck Club on the night of her 19th birthday. Phoebe and Frankie had an instant connection, and by the end of that night, the two had sex in the same room where Cora was being pressured into a three-way with J.D. (Jacob Pitts) and his real estate broker friend, Tod (Gary Hilborn).

Unfortunately, the sex between Phoebe and Frankie was too much for her heart, and that ultimately cost her life. Frankie tried to revive Phoebe by giving her heart compressions, but in the process of doing so, Frankie unintentionally snapped Phoebe’s rib cage.

That prompted Cora to hit Frankie in the exact same manner in which she murdered him in the present day. J.D., in turn, pulled Cora off of Frankie and knocked her out with an ashtray, explaining Cora’s memory loss.

While the last episode revealed why Cora killed Frankie at the end of the series premiere, it remains to be seen whether Cora’s recaptured memories will be enough to save her from being prosecuted for murder.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Bill Pullman said that the finale has some surprises in store even for viewers who have read Petra Hammesfahr’s book on which the series is based.

“There are still things they get to be surprised by,” said Pullman who plays detective Ambrose on the series. “The weight and value of things are different too. There are things that can take a long time in the book that don’t so much in our story and vice versa.”

“For one thing, the Ambrose character is not nearly as developed in the book as he is in the show. What he goes through in the last phase is more invented by [executive producer] Derek [Simonds],” added Pullman, before revealing that there’s a resolution to Ambrose’s marriage in the finale. “I don’t think it’s something you’ll be prepared for,” he teased.

“The Sinner” Season 1, episode 8 airs on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. EDT on USA Network. Watch the trailer for the episode below:
