Cora’s murder case gets even more puzzling in Season 1, episode 5 of “The Sinner.”

According to the synopsis for the next episode of the USA Network series, the discovery of a body in the woods results in more questions about the case.

While the authorities have yet to determine the identity of the corpse, Cora’s (Jessica Biel) recently recovered memories, as well as the latest findings from Ambrose (Bill Pullman) and Leroy’s (Dohn Norwood) investigation, suggest that the body belongs to Maddie (Danielle Burgess).

In Season 1, episode 4, Ambrose and Leroy got the chance to interview Maddie’s former landlord, Debra (Pamela Gray). Debra told the detectives that Maddie has been missing since the Fourth of July weekend in 2012 — the same time Cora met Maddie and her boyfriend J.D. (Jacob Pitts) at Carl’s Taproom.

If the body really belongs to Maddie, then J.D. and Cora are both suspects in her apparent murder. Besides the fact that J.D. was one of the last individuals Maddie was seen with before her disappearance, Debra told Ambrose and Leroy that J.D. had this sort of “control” over his girlfriend. “When I said to Maddie [that] I thought maybe J.D. had stolen my things, she panicked. She cried. She begged me not to confront him,” Debra recalled. “A few weeks later she was gone.”

Cora, meanwhile, mentioned during her first memory-recovery session with Dr. Chang (Mia Katigbak) that she hates Maddie. “I want to hold her underwater and I want to break her into pieces,” Cora said. When asked why she’d like to do that, Cora answered, “Because she won’t let me go.”

And during her second memory-recovery session, it was revealed that Cora actually stepped on Maddie’s rib cage after the mysterious man in a mask instructed her to “push through.”

In the trailer for episode 5, Detective Farmer (Joanna Adler) appears to be pushing Cora to confess toMaddie’s murder. But Cora insists that she’s innocent. “I didn’t do this,” she says.

Elsewhere in the promo clip, Ambrose appears to have located the house where Cora, Maddie and J.D. drove to after hanging out at Carl’s Taproom. Mason (Christopher Abbott) also sees J.D. driving around their house, seemingly looking for revenge.

“The Sinner” Season 1, episode 5 airs on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 10 p.m. EDT on USA Network. Watch the trailer for the episode below:
