A major snow storm struck the Northeast, leaving disruptions in air and road travel and caused a major pile-up in the central part of the state.

Turnpike officials say 16 commercial vehicles were among those involved in Friday morning's crash that closed lanes in both directions forcing traffic off the roadway between the Carlisle and Breezewood exits.

The third major snowstorm of the winter is reported to leave as much as 20 inches of snow in New York City by Saturday morning, according to forecasts.

A spokesman says the New York City area's three major airports have canceled more than 1,000 flights. About 3,000 usually leave the airports daily.

New Jersey Transit has canceled buses to New York City. Rail service in New Jersey and Long Island is suspended or delayed.
