Somalia’s first female foreign minister has just been appointed by Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon.

Fauzia Yusuf Haji Adan will join Shirdon’s new 10-minister cabinet, following the prime minister’s appointment by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last month.

“My nomination as the foreign minister is historic for the Somali country and particularly for the women of Somalia, it turns a new page for the political situation of our country and will lead to success and prosperity," Adan said of her nomination, the BBC reported.

Somalia has been a fractured country for over two decades without an effective central government.

Mohamud was elected in September in what was considered the country’s first fair election in several decades.

Nevertheless, the country remains divided. Many parts of the country are controlled by the Islamic militant group Al-Shabab, and a region in the northwest called Somaliland has had de facto independence since 1991.
