The United States confirmed the first Hispanic of the Supreme Court on Thursday voting 66-31 for Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Democrats celebrated the nomination. Among the votes for her were nine from the Republican party which mostly opposed her election. Sotomayor, 55 will succeed Justice David H. Souter who retired in June.

President Barack Obama said he was deeply gratified, and very happy on the votes the Senate handled on Thursday.

I'm filled with pride in this achievement and great confidence that Judge Sotomayor will make and outstanding supreme court justice.

She is the third female justice in the history of the court.
