The blue hedgehog of the early 90's is set for a comeback, following video game developers SEGA's announcement that Sonic CD - a critically acclaimed platform game - would venture into mobile and console territory. The announcement was made Wednesday, according to a report on Venture Beat.

The game will be available for the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad at the introductory price of $1.99. The technology blog Venture Beat believes that Sonic CD will also be available on the Xbox Live Arcade, where it will cost $5. Further reports indicate the game will be released on the Playstation Network on Dec. 20. In addition, Slash Gear's latest update states that Android devices can now download the app as well. Windows Phone users can expect the game to be released for their systems in 2012.

The game will remain fairly true to the original. However, SEGA has ironed out a few old-school misses by adding a couple of new features fans are sure to love.

Apart from being able to time travel, players can now also play as Tails, Sonic's famous sidekick, once they complete the main game. The game also features the introduction of Sonic's archenemy - Metal Sonic. Other tweaks include wide-screen support and the original U.S. and Japanese soundtracks, which will send old-time gamers down memory lane.

Sonic's 20th anniversary has been a banner year for him - as well as for everyone at SEGA, said Haruki Satomi, senior vice president at SEGA of America, in a statement on the company's blog.

Gamers around the world are rediscovering their love of Sonic through his adventures, new and old. Whether you are a long-time hedgehog aficionado looking to enjoy a favorite moment from Sonic's past, or a brand-new player who wants to join in on the fun, there is no better place to start than with one of Sonic's most celebrated games, Sonic CD, he added.

If you're new to the world of Sonic, the game is about the little hedgehog's dramatic attempts to stop the evil Dr. Eggman from taking control of time by recovering the Time Stones from the Little Planet. In addition, Sonic must also save the damsel in distress - Amy Rose - a pink hedgehog with a crush on him.
