Beaming the audience at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 with words like Portable and Cross-Platform, Sony on Thursday announced the launch of PlayStation Suite to expand PS Platform to smartphones and other devices.

Today we are announcing PlayStation Suite, said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment at the Tokyo event.

Recalling how the launch of PlayStation Portable transformed the way games were played, Hirai remarked, Now, the environment surrounding the world of portable gaming has undergone a radical transformation since the launch of the PSP five or six years ago.

There was a time that the only way to play a game outside was to carry a portable gaming console like the PSP, he added.

Now, with smartphones coming into the picture, the company seems to be in the mood to play the phone game as well.

These phone devices are finally technically ready for PSP-like performance, Hirai said, before announcing the launch of the PlayStation Suite.

PlayStation Suite extends the PlayStation experience beyond the PSP, by providing PlayStation content to other devices, he elaborated on the company's new device.

Besides the fact that the company will first emulate the first generation PSP titles to be available on PS Suite devices, the president informed that the PlayStation Suite also has a new development framework for developing mobile-specific titles.

Dubbed 'Hardware-neutral Game Framework', the hardware agnostic framework simplifies the content development process.

While existing partners will have ready access to it, Sony is planning on reaching out to more developers.
