An update is currently available for Sony’s PlayStation 4 console, but patch notes suggest the 336MB improvement won’t make any substantial difference in the system’s performance.

Firmware update 1.62 reportedly improves “operation quality during use of some PlayStation 4 software,” while not targeting any specific console operation.

It seems update 1.62 improves general stability fixes and not much else. Many gamers are hoping the PS4’s next system update will bring some new apps.

Meanwhile, Sony’s PS4 sales have remained impressive since its Nov. 15 launch last year. A recent survey on DealNews revealed that 35 percent of gamers who owned an Xbox 360 and PS3 chose to purchase Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 4, while only 23 percent opted for Microsoft’s Xbox One. This poll of 1,727 readers showed that while brand loyalty was certainly a factor for gamers who owned only one console from the previous generation, owners who possessed both consoles were more likely to choose the PS4. Of the 1,727 participants polled, 44 percent owned both a PS3 and Xbox 360.

“Frequently with advanced software-driven technology, consumers will feel inclined to remain within the environment that they're familiar and comfortable with,” DealNews said on Feb. 24. The site’s statistics show that only 42 percent of Xbox 360 owners chose to buy the Xbox One, while 51 percent of PS3 owners purchased the PS4.

The PS4 has sold 6 million units globally as of March 2, according to a recent press release by Sony. This also accounts for the 370,000 consoles sold in Japan since the Japanese launch on Feb. 22. As of Feb. 8, 5.3 million PS4s had reached consumers. The console is currently available in 57 countries internationally.

"I am absolutely delighted that PS4 is off to such a great start in Japan," said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "The responses we have received for the PS4 system's integrated social capabilities have been phenomenal, and I couldn't be more thrilled that gamers are utilizing these unique features to engage, share, play and connect with users around the world. SCE will continue to expand the world of PlayStation by growing its library of breakthrough games and bringing more innovative features and services only possible on PS4."

Software sales are also high, with more than 13.7 million games sold through digital downloads in the PlayStation Store and in retail stores like Target or GameStop.
