At least 12 people were killed and 26 injured early on Wednesday in a landslide in South Korea, officials told media.

The landslide caused by heavy rain crashed into a South Korean mountain resort in Chuncheon, about 100 km (60 miles) east of Seoul destroying four buildings, including two small hotels, Reuters reported.

Chuncheon is a resort city near the Soyang river dam and the damage costs are expected to run into millions of dollars, it said.

According to Yonhap news agency, most of the victims of the landslide were college students.

Torrential rains and current weather situation has battered Seoul since late Tuesday, causing widespread flooding and transport delays.
